Registering Dependents with the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS)

Today, we would like to guide you

register foreign nationals residing in Korea as dependents
under the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS).
Recently, an Indian client visited us to register his wife as a dependent under his NHIS coverage.
For this process, he obtained a Marriage Certificate issued in India,
authenticated it with an Apostille in his home country,

Joining the NHIS as a Dependent via a Marriage Certificate
For foreign residents in Korea to register family members
—such as a spouse, children (direct descendants), or parents (direct ascendants)
—as dependents under the NHIS, their familial relationship must be officially verified.
This is typically done through official documents such as
a Family Relations Certificate, Marriage Certificate, or Birth Certificate.
Key Requirements for Dependent Registration
* Issuance & Authentication: Obtain the relevant civil certificate from your home country,
followed by Apostille or Consular Legalization from your home country's authorities
(or your local embassy in Korea).
* Certified Korean Translation & Notarization: Once authenticated overseas,
the document must be translated into Korean and officially notarized
before submission to the NHIS.

⚠️ Important Note: Documents that have not completed the overseas Apostille or
consular authentication process will not be accepted by the NHIS,
even if they are translated and notarized in Korea.
Alternatively, you may submit birth certificates, marriage certificates,
or family relation certificates issued directly
by your home country's embassy located in South Korea,
followed by local translation and notarization.
